As the temperature drops, the southward migration brings many songbirds back to East and West Sussex for the autumn season. It’s the perfect time for families to grab the binoculars and head outside for some colourful entertainment. If you’re not sure what you’re looking at, Arundel Wetland Centre is offering a two hour Birding for Beginners course on Saturday 22 October for families and novices. In the classroom you will learn the different types and colourings of the seasonal birds and wildfowl currently at the site, then the guide takes you outside to help you put your new skill to practise.

If you want to see more birds this winter, learn how to attract them to your garden. WWT Arundel Wetland Centre is hosting Birdie Bites: dream dining for feathered friends, a talk and demonstration on Oct 18-for three days of the Arundel Food Festival. The ‘ready-steady-cook’ for birds approach introduces recipes for home made feeds and shows the types of feeders available on the market. The reserve wardens share how they feed the wildfowl at the wetland centre site.

Birdie Bites is free with paid centre admission on Oct 18-20. Start time is 2:30 pm in the Outlook In building. No booking is required.

Birding for Beginners costs £2 for children and £5 for adults and does not centre admission. The course runs 10am – noon OR 2pm – 4 pm. Call 01903 881530 to book Birding for Beginners.
