Natural Beekeeping Weekend 11th to 13th April 2014

Author: Philosophy Girl Published: 26th March 2012 18:06

If you have been thinking of taking up beekeeping but were not sure about the expensive equipment and complicated processes, take a look at 'Natural Beekeeping' with the Horizontal Top Bar Hive.  It is a fresh take on an ancient concept which puts the care and health of the bees as the most important consideration, taking into account their natural habits and cycles.

This fantastic weekend course, led by Phil Chandler, author of 'The Barefoot Beekeeper', is a great opportunity to learn the basics of ‘natural beekeeping’ in top bar hives. It is a simple, practical way to have healthy and happy bees in your garden, with the possibility of your own honey harvest, but without the cost and complications associated with conventional beekeeping.

This beginners’ course is intended for people with little or no previous knowledge of bees or beekeeping, and will provide you with all the information you need to decide if, when and how you will take up ‘natural bee-keeping’.

We will discuss:

  • The nature of honeybees and their relationship with flowering plants

  • The history of our relationship with bees

  • Principles of natural beekeeping

  • Planning and preparation

  • The top bar hive: construction and use

  • Keeping healthy bees

  • Your first beekeeping year

Numbers on the course will be kept low (16 max) to ensure that everyone has plenty of opportunity to ask questions and explore the subject with Phil in as much depth as they wish.  He is passionate about the subject and loves to pass this on to other enthusiasts.  You will be fascinated and inspired.

The cost of the weekend (7pm - 10pm Fri, 9am - 5pm Sat and Sun) is £125. Or if you would like to stay over, the cost for accommodation (shared) and breakfast would be £30 for the Friday and Saturday (£30 for both, not each).

Brinscall Hall is a beautiful and comfortable country house set in a large organic garden in the heart of the Lancashire countryside.
