Ring of Silver and Gold Challenge
Family Open Day at Leeds Parish Church
Saturday 9th July 2011
11.00am - 4.00pm
The Rector of Leeds Parish Church, Canon Tony Bundock, is pleased to announce the Ring of Silver and Gold Challenge on Saturday 9th July 2011. The doors to Leeds' historic Parish Church will open at 11am for a Fun Family Open Day. A programme of activities including exhibitions, tours, competitions and demonstrations will be available throughout the day as well as fun and games for children. Everyone is warmly invited to take part in placing coins end to end to circumnavigate the church.
During the course of the day a range of activities showcasing Leeds Parish Church will be available, including tours of the magnificent Victorian building undertaken by church warden Ann Clark. It will be possible to find out about the 1000-year-old Saxon cross, to meet the Saints in the magnificent glass mosaics and to discover the stories in the stained-glass windows.
A Photographic Exhibition of Leeds Parish Church will be on display. The prints on show depict the church at work, including its stained-glass windows and their wonderful colour. The pictures can be viewed on the altar flat throughout the day. The exhibition will also be available to view during the Summer months after the Open Day.
The St Peters Society of Change Ringers will be demonstrating change ringing on hand-bells within the church and there will be a real life tower bell simulator for people to try actual tower bell ringing. It will also be possible to do regular tours of the tower to see the ringing chamber and display boards demonstrating what the ringers do up the Leeds Parish Church Tower.
The music department will be showcasing the grand four-manual Harrison organ under the direction of Resident Organist David Houlder. There will be organ tours together with occasional musical interludes during the day.
Games for children of every age will be organised by our Curate David Ford! The fun activities will feature a parachute following the successful fund-raising jump by "the rector's angels"
The proceedings will be drawn to a close by a "Come and Sing" Choral Concert. Children are encouraged to come to a rehearsal earlier in the day conducted by The Master of the Music Dr Simon Lindley. The concert will end the formal proceedings of the Open Day with the opportunity to sing with regular members of Leeds Parish Church Choir.
Drinks and light refreshments will be available from the City of Leeds Room all day and a barbeque will start at 1.00pm.
