The successful beer festival which took place in late March and early April 2017 at North Leeds Cricket Club is the Roundhay Rotary's major annual fundraising event. Members of the rotary club decided that a portion of the profits should be invested into the local community.

Following a chance conversation between club secretary Derek Davidson and Leeds Rowing Club, David Cottrell identified a need for two new rowing machines as the existing ones were literally falling to pieces. The criteria for providing the funds were that the machines had to be inclusive to cater for those with disabilities, as well as a sustainable project which benefits young people in the city.

David Cottrell said, "The purchase of these machines has been a huge benefit to the club as we can teach youngsters rowing techniques before they take to the water". "Also, we can use them for training, and indoor competitions when the weather does not permit us to row on Roundhay Park lake. "We can also use them for warming up before taking to the water and winding down after rowing". "Since they arrived the youngsters are queuing up to use them as the results of their rowing on these machines can be downloaded onto smartphones and they can keep a record of their progress, something not available on the existing machines".

David also added, "If we had more rowing coaches we could make better use on the machines provided and take on more youngsters as we currently have a 1 year waiting list for young rowers, anyone interested in helping should contact me". "They don't have to have a training certificate, only commitment."

Gurminder Singh, current President of the Rotary Club said, "This is just one of the organisations in the local community to benefit from our Beer Festival and it was a delight to see the enthusiasm of the youngsters at the Rowing Club". "I am sure they we be in use for many years to come."

Other organisation to benefit have been Roundhay Stroke club, John Jameson School and youngsters for local schools participating in the ocean going Young sailor, Rotary Technology Tournament, Young Writer, Young Musician and Young Chef as well as the residential Rotary Young Leadership Award which counts toward the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

The North Leeds Charity Beer Festival is organised and run by The Rotary Club of Roundhay, since its inception in 2012 close to £30k has been raised for Rotary causes locally, nationally and internationally. The seventh annual North Leeds Charity Beer Festival takes place at North Leeds Cricket Club 6-7 April 2018.
