Frankie Dettori, one of the greatest legends of the sport right now just had to make this list. Dettori has been entertaining fans for years in this sport, and he brings that lively Italian flair each time he partakes in a race. He might be a little bit excitable and a little bit extravagant, but everybody loves him nonetheless.
Dettori is particularly well known for his jumping dismounts after a winning race, and this always puts a smile on fans and competitors’ faces. He seems like he is just weightless as he springs off the back of the horse with his arms in the air, and it has become a symbol of Dettori obtaining yet another win in this sport.
Besides the animated post-game celebrations, Dettori is a particularly unique character in his post-race interviews. With a permanent smile on his face and his full Italian passion on show, it’s hard not to think that he’s a little bit out there! With all of this said, he’s a legend of the sport and we hope he continues for many years to come.
- Silvestre de Sousa
Moving away from the Italian Stallion now, we have another interesting jockey in the form of Silvestre de Sousa. He is actually a Brazilian national, and being one of a grand total of ten siblings, it’s fair to say that de Sousa comes from a rather lively family. This is reflected in his upbeat manner and almost party-like attitude for important horse races.
As excitable as de Sousa can be, he’s a loveable guy with a very friendly personality, and this is why he definitely fits the description of wacky but wonderful. We love that he’s not afraid to speak his personality or take a risk either, whether this is through a risky race strategy or through speaking his mind.
As it happens, he would never have even been a jockey should someone not have told him that he looked like he had the build for it. Apparently, this is all he needed to saddle a horse for the first time, and as they say, the rest is history.
