Formula 1, Tsunoda crash on Thursday, not the worst case

Published: 25th May 2021 14:18

AlphaTauri can be pulled back to a strong Thursday at the Monaco GP. Tsunoda's collision in FP2 caused a negative aftertaste, however. What were the bets you made on NetBet online casino? AlphaTauri has had difficult weeks recently and has often not been able to get everything out of an actually strong package. The first two free practice sessions of the Monaco Grand Prix on Thursday gave the Italian racing team a sigh of relief. Both Yuki Tsunoda and Pierre Gasly even finished FP1 in the top 10 before the afternoon was a little more difficult.

Gasly in particular was satisfied with the performance of his car but was not yet able to get everything out of the AT02. Meanwhile, team-mate Tsunoda collided with the track barrier in second free practice, which shortened the Japanese’s working day on the track a little. With regard to qualifying, however, this incident should not have too great an impact.

Pierre Gasly: We are still missing a little bit of everything

After a rather disappointing Grand Prix in Barcelona, Pierre Gasly was able to convince with a few fast laps on Thursday, which resulted in the fourth-fastest time in the first free practice. "That was a good way to start the race week in Monaco. I felt comfortable in the car and was able to push pretty hard," the Frenchman sums up Thursday.

Despite this strong start, everything is not yet in balance. "It's pretty tough in the car. I hope we can still work on it and find out how we can improve in areas where we still have problems," said Gasly.

According to Gasly, there is still a lot of work to be done for the team, especially with regard to the important qualifying, which the team also attributes to the track characteristics of Monaco: "We are missing a little bit of everything, but Monaco is pretty unique in terms of grip and also pretty bumpy. Now we just have to find out how we can get the best out of our package. But we have a good base and we can hopefully take another step forward. "

Gasly already suggests that the Q3 is the declared goal. The big problem AlphaTauris had at the last race weekend was not having got the most out of it, which meant that Franz Tost's squad had already slipped a few points through the fingers. "With qualifying, for example, if we were to be on pole position, we would have to realize it. Objectively speaking, it would of course be great to reach Q3. I hope we can make it into the top five manage, but the top 8 are more realistic.

Tsunoda collision 'of course not ideal'

Thursday was a little more turbulent for team-mate Yuki Tsunoda. In the second free practice session, the rear of his bolide broke slightly in the swimming pool chicane, whereupon the Japanese hit the outer guardrail and damaged his rear suspension. As a result, the training session ended prematurely for the AlphaTauri pilot. "I don't think that I pushed too hard when entering the corner. The tires also deteriorated a bit and it was also a bit windy - but I don't know for sure. I just lost the rear end and between turns 15 and 16 I have the Track boundary touched, "says Tsunoda, describing the incident.

Although the Japanese lost some track time as a result of this incident, especially since the rookie is driving a Formula 1 racing car in the Principality for the first time this weekend, Tsunoda is still relatively relaxed about the situation: "I'm not sure whether this will help my race preparation. Of course, wasting time is not ideal, but I still have two sets of soft tires left for Saturday, so that's not the worst-case now. I just have to prepare more for Saturday and get it on track. when it comes to something. "
