Prize-winning students to enjoy more time in the kitchen with Grid Thirteen

For a second year running, luxury kitchens and home interiors studio Grid Thirteen has teamed up with GSAL to support the school's art, design and technology students.
This year Grid Thirteen sponsored the food technology showcase of A-level, AS-level and GCSE students' final products and awarded prizes for some standout culinary creations. The winning students will have the opportunity to spend a day working with a top chef in a renowned restaurant.
The design brief set by the examination board for the GCSE candidates was to produce a delicatessen product using seasonal and/or locally sourced ingredients where possible.
There were two winners in this year group - Toby Winston for his roast pumpkin and fennel seed tortellini and Sophie Summersgill, who created a poached pear and vanilla panacotta.
The pair will be spending a day with Michelin-trained chef Stephen Bulmer at Swinton Park.
The sixth form winners were Dominic Hardman, upper sixth, and Becky Moore, lower sixth, who will spend a day with Michelin-starred chef Nigel Smith, executive chef for Miele.
Keen rugby player Dominic was inspired by the upcoming Rugby World Cup to fulfil the brief of ‘current trends' for his A-level product. With hungry spectators in mind, he came up with ‘scrum pie', a bread dough case filled with caramelised onions, red peppers and pork and Wensleydale sausages.
The brief for Becky, studying for AS-levels, was to reinvent a ready-made dessert from a supermarket range, so she gave a caramel twist to a mango and passion fruit layered dessert.
The four winners were selected by Grid Thirteen design director Natalie Fry in conjunction with GSAL's food technology staff. Head of food technology Yvonne Wilson said: "All are deserving winners, based on the excellent standard of their practical work and their innovative design ideas which reflect current product development trends.
"This is the first time such an event has taken place and we thank Grid Thirteen for their support; as a contemporary design company they are particularly appropriate partners to encourage the innovative design ideas of our students."
