Helen Whittam is a health professional accredited by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and the Health Professions Council. Her experience has been gained through a number of sectors including the NHS, private practice, and Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club's Centre of Excellence.


Since 2004, Helen has worked in Physiotherapy for both East Sussex, and East Kent Hospitals NHS Trusts. This involved working accross a variety of different areas including A&E, Intensive Care, Trauma and Elective Orthopeadic Surgery, Amputees, Respiratory, Palliative Care, Neurology, Peadiatrics, MusculoSkeletal Outpatients, Care of the Elderly, Womens Heatlh, and Intermediate Care within the community.

Since 2005, Helen has also worked as a Sports Physiotherapist for Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club's Centre of Excellence. Her role within the club is dedicated to the youth teams between the age of 9 and 18 years concentrating on injury prevention and rehabilitation. She also attends both home and away games with the teams, and provides hands-on physiotherapy at pitch side.
Experience of Private Practice has been gained by providing clients with physiotherapy treatment within their own homes.Although this has been very successful, especially for those who have been unable to travel to attend their appointment, Helen is now embarking on a new venture and setting up her own Physiotherapy clinic in her home town of Heathfield, East Sussex.
What is Physiotherapy?


Physiotherapy is a health care profession that concentrates on human movement and function using physical approaches to promote, maintain and restore physical, psychological and social well-being. Physiotherapy treatment is science-based, committed to extending, applying, evaluating and reviewing the evidence that underpins and informs its practice and delivery.

Chartered Physiotherapists are involved in a huge range of care and can assist in the diagnosis and treatment, as well as the management and prevention of many conditions, for example:

  • Spinal problems - prolapsed discs, degeneration, sciatica, lumbago, whiplash, neck and lower back pain, and referred pain.
  • Joint problems - arthritis, injury, pain and swelling, and stiffness.
  • Injuries - muscles, ligaments, cartilage and tendons. Work related conditions such as repetitive strain injury (RSI) and sports injuries.
  • Following surgery - rehabilitation after orthopaedic surgery eg. hip and knee replacements.
  • Fractures - treatment to increase the healing rate and gain full function once the bones have healed.
  • Gynaecological conditions - including stress incontinence and post-surgery rehabilitation.
  • Obstetrics - including ante and post-natal classes/exercise/relaxation/advice and treatment for backpain during pregnancy.
  • Chest conditions - both medical and surgical including hayfever, asthma and sinusitis, pneumonia, cystic fibrosis, emphysema, bronchitis and bronchiectasis.
  • Neurological conditions - such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, nerve injuries, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease, and ME.
  • Paediatrics - for childhood conditions including postural and walking problems, and neurological conditons such as cerebral palsy, ataxia, and leuchemia.
  • Circulatory problems - such as Raynauds disease, wounds, ulcers and cardiac rehabilitation.
  • Therapeutic and sports massage.
  • Ergonomics - advice on manual handling and posture at work.

Consultation
During the consultation the physiotherapist will need to have a detailed understanding of your past medical history as well as the history of your present condition. It is important for you to give as much relevant information as possible and have your current medication at hand in order for the Physiotherapist to assess and treat you appropriately and effectively.

The initial consultation will last for 45 minutes and will include a thorough subjective assessment and treatment plan. Follow-up appointments will last for 30 minutes and will include re-assessment and the progression of treatment in relation to your current symptoms. Home visits are avilable to for those unable to attend clinic as unfortunately there is currently no disabled access on site.

Treatment may include therapeutic or sports massage, mobilisation techniques, manipulation, exercise prescription, propriceptive neuromuscular faciliation, core stability work, fitness training, cardiac rehabilition, and advice on the prevention and management of symptoms. Free telephone consultations are available upon request.
