More DetailsSouthampton & Winchester Visitors Group
More DetailsIn 2001 a small group of volunteers started to visit asylum seekers in Winchester prison and set up WVG, Winchester Visitors' Group. Our group expanded when the Home Office chose to disperse some asylum seekers to Southampton and in 2007 we changed the name to SWVG, Southampton and Winchester Visitors' Group, to reflect the base of our activities and the growing number of visitors from the Southampton area.
We befriend asylum seekers and refugees who experience particular difficulties. They are referred by agencies such as Refugee Action, Southampton City College and Social Services.
Since 2004, when new Home Office regulations caused many asylum seekers to become destitute, SWVG has operated the ASSIST scheme with the help of local churches and other organisations, to provide temporary accommodation and subsistence for the most vulnerable. Many local people have responded with warmth and generosity.
SWVG also campaigns for a more just and humane asylum system, contributing to the national debate about immigration and asylum and lobbying MPs and local opinion-formers. In order to raise awareness and funds, we have held a number of successful public events, including Voices in a Strange Land, a five-day series of performances and discussions in Winchester in November 2006. SWVG patrons have been active on our behalf. The explorer John Pilkington has generously donated proceeds to the group from illustrated talks about his adventures and the actress Miriam Margolyes has held a private lunch for asylum-seekers and their visitors.
