Ely and District Cycling Club juniors take part in the Muddy Monsters race

Ely and District Cycling Club continued their winter season of off-road racing with a strong showing from the junior members of the club.

On Saturday 4 Ely club members took part in round 9 of the Eastern Cyclocross League series at Hempton Cross.

After his uncharacteristic failure to finish in the previous round, Phil Peacock came back strongly with a return to form, finishing in 6th place in the Veteran 50+ race, while in the Veteran 40+ race Stephen Croft finished in 39th place with Ferenc Vanhoutte in 50th. Isaac Barton continued his progress in the discipline finishing 15th in the Under 14 race.

On Sunday some more of the club's junior members headed off to take part in the Muddy Monsters race hosted by the King's Lynn Cycling Club. Muddy Monsters is an off-road race series for Under-16s.

Tom Lewis and Ollie Sinden dominated proceedings, coming 1st and 2nd overall in the Under 12s category respectively. On his way to victory, Ollie came 1st in the Sprint race and 2nd in the Endurance race. Tom came 3rd in the Sprint race and 1st in the Endurance race, a race in which he showed considerable tactical maturity, sitting on the leader's wheel until the last lap when he sprinted to victory over the course of the final lap. In the Handicap race the tables were turned with Tom taking 1st place followed by Ollie in 2nd.

As part of the EDCC's programme of encouraging junior riders, the club is holding weekly Junior coaching sessions take place on Monday evenings at Ely College, details of which can be obtained from Cliff Loveday on 07443 953308.
