Beverley Hyper-Local Website under Attack
| Published: 6th March 2010 11:15 |

AboutMyArea is one of a handful of so-called 'hyper-local' websites that have, during recent years, appeared in various towns and villages across the country in order to serve their local community. To produce the grass-roots news at a very local level and to promote the efforts of all their local community interest groups, drama groups, sports clubs, charities... you name it: but if it's a good, community based local cause, they now have somewhere to make their voice heard. HU17.net serves just that purpose for the town of Beverley.
If what we read is to be believed, larger print-based organisations are struggling to compete. This is to such an extent that certain media organisations are already charging, or planning to charge the public a subscription fee in order to be able to view their online Internet content.
This week the Hull Daily Mail appeared to demonstrate the depth of their concern over the competition that they seem to believe that they are facing by attempting to discredit one of East Riding's most successful examples of the 'hyper-local' genre: HU17.net the website that serves Beverley.
What is perhaps more disturbing is the fact that the Hull Daily Mail forms only a part of the wider publishing empire of Northcliffe Media who have similar Daily Publications operating in many towns across the length and breadth of the UK. We can only hope that this is a one-off attack and not the start of a more widespread 'David versus Goliath' campaign.
AboutMyArea, HU17.net and The Hedon Blog first got in-touch with each another through the efforts of The Hedon Blog during 2009 and we are well aware of each others websites and we try to support each other as much as possible.
It is therefore a very sad day indeed when you read such headlines as were splashed across the Hull Daily Mail this week. However, I intend to continue to judge HU17.net on the content of HU17.net alone:

HU17.net - Click for their view...
