Greenpower 2012 at a very wet and windy Silverstone yesterday
On Sunday Silverstone National Circuit hosted the Greenpower Corporate Challenge 2012. This annual event organised by The Greenpower Education Trust and supported by Silverstone, Siemens and the IET challenges corporate professionals to design and build an electric car to compete in this four hour endurance race against the top youth teams in the country.
The Corporate Challenge is a fantastic opportunity for business to get involved with the Greenpower initiative, which promotes sustainable engineering as a career to anyone aged 9-25 through a long running and highly regarded electric car race series, with over 500 participating educational establishments.
Torrential rain and gale-force winds saw the four hour race shortened to two hours forty minutes, with the highly advanced cars from Politechnika Slaska, a University from Poland, claiming first and second place at the chequered flag. Electroad, an organisation from Sussex took third narrowly beating home the first of the school teams. Other notable entrants included Jaguar Land Rover and Peugeot Citroen with works cars designed and built by their graduate and apprentice teams.
Silverstone Managing Director Richard Phillips started the Corporate Challenge. He commented “Silverstone is a great supporter of any initiatives that develop environmentally friendly motoring and motorsport and we are delighted to be hosting the Greenpower Corporate Challenge again in 2012.”
