Norton Starting To Look Good In Race For Promotion After Win

GNCC Vs Willoughby

A fiercely hot day at Greens Norton welcomed second in the table Willoughby to the Churchill Oval (see me for a history lesson), with Willoughby lucky enough to win the toss and as is traditional opted to bat, making the opposition field in the heat.

This seemed a decent call with Jenkin and Kightley a little wayward in 30+ degrees. The game changed though in the 8th over with Willoughby 31-0.

Jenkin cut one back on opener Alcock (20) to be brilliantly caught behind by Turner off an inside edge, next ball Rayner played one off the middle of the bat down the leg side again into the safe hands of Turner – a long trip back from his holiday for a first baller. Sidhu missed the third ball but was out to a diving catch from Bristow at point off the fourth – a 3 wicket maiden.

Nichol and Hollis tried to consolidate until Hollis fell bowled by Yuill for 14 and Hallam bowled first ball, again the hat trick ball wasted but by now Willoughby were starting to struggle and when Yuill (3-31) caught Nicol for 18 off his own bowling the end looked close.

Fitzgerald too missed a hat trick but some late resistance from the final pair took Willoughby to 101 all out before a classic tail enders run out saw the end of Johnson for 6.

An early close saw Norton bat before tea and Bristow trying to hit his second ball out of the ground was caught off Nicolls for 0. Baker too fell before tea for none caught behind off the dangerous Crane 19-2 at tea and the match looking poised.

Fitzgerald (3) and Turner (0) went soon after tea as the wicket started to also suffer from the heat and Bodily and Yuill tried in uncharacteristically patient fashion to get closer to the target.

When Bodily fell for an excellent 25 and Norton at 58-5 the pressure was really on Yuill and the lower order, Kightley and Jenkin both kept him company for some time as the total gradually edged up and Willoughby really started to feel they were in with a chance but at 89-7 with plenty of time the pressure was high on both teams.

Enter Bowmer jnr whose response to some aggressive sledging was to hit Johnson for 4 and 2 off his last over (of a tight spell 1-25) and Norton moved to within 3 runs of victory. Yuill finally took Alcock for a fine driven boundary through the covers to finish the game, Norton winning by 3 wickets and Yuill 37 not out having batted for 22 overs – a great, if untypical, innings from him.

Norton starting to look good in the race for promotion.
