Rich Smith lives in Castle Donington and officially became a 2012 Olympic Torchbearer as he carried the torch through Dingley in Leicestershire at 3.13pm on Monday 2nd July 2012.
Olympic Torchbearer, Rich Smith of Castle DoningtonAfter negotiating Market Harborough where literally thousands of people were lining the streets waiting for the Olympic Torch Relay, AboutMyArea/DE74 made a late, diverted dash to the village of Dingley where local man, Rich Smith was due to carry the Olympic Torch.
Getting to the streets involved quite a jog but emerging with minutes to spare up the road from where we imagined Rich Smith would be running and with the Olympic Torch convoy already passing through, AboutMyArea had to run past the Olympic Torch to enable a rendezvous with Rich prior to him having his Torch lit.
Fortunately we managed this, Rich posed for a couple of photographs before the flame was exchanged to his own Torch and then we were back on the road, running to get a few more snaps. At the end of Richard's run the flame was transferred to the lamp, put back on the bus and taken the few miles to Market Harborough where the next Torchbearers would start their relay runs.
Runners are dropped off en route by a bus and picked up again soon after their run, but it was obvious Rich had enjoyed his experience as he had a brief moment to reflect with AboutMyArea, girlfriend Olivia, her parents and friends from Loughborough University who had also braved the elements to witness his big moment live, before he was ushered back onto the Olympic Torch relay bus.
Brilliant! Well done Rich!
The Olympic Flame then went on to Market Harborough where thousands lined the streets...
