Clocks Changing And Winter Approaching Is Your Cycle Safe To Use?

With the clocks changing and winter approaching is your cycle ready and safe to use? With the clocks changing and winter approaching is your cycle ready and safe to use?

Cycle repairs, wheel truing, gear tuning, brake adjustments and puncture repairs are carried out by Towcester Cycle Servicing (TCS). Based in Towcester, TCS also offers reasonably priced safety and full bicycle servicing.

Now that the darker evenings are with us the last thing you want is your cycle breaking down and you having to walk a few miles home in the wet and the cold. Whether you intend riding through the autumn and winter months or plan to moth ball your bike, now would be a good time to have it checked over. If you have it checked over prior to putting it into storage, when you do come to start cycling again in the spring, there'll be no nasty surprises.

A good habit to get into when returning from a ride or putting the bike away for a while,  is to put the chain onto the smallest chain ring and sprocket by operating the gear levers. This will relax the tension on the cables and help stop the gear mechanisms from seizing up.

Here are a few more tips for riding in the dark winter months.

  • Clean road salt off your cycle as often as you can.
  • If you ride when it is icy let your tyre pressure down a little.
  • Consider fitting mudguards if you haven’t got them already. It will keep the cold road spray off your back and keep your cycle and clothing cleaner.
  • If riding at night, make sure your lights are working properly.
  • Watch out for greasy leaf fall, especially in the wet, your front wheel can easily slide from under you.
  • Have you considered wearing a cycle helmet?
  • Get your cycle checked over before it lets you down.

Servicing is essential to keeping your bike running smoothly and trouble free.
