Devonians wanting a career change should try care as COVID-19 restrictions relax

Published: 1st June 2020 16:55

DEVON employees who are currently unable to work due to COVID-19 restrictions are being asked to consider a career change and to retrain as frontline carers in the county (June 2020).

HomeLife Carers, which has offices in Barnstaple, Okehampton, Plymouth and Tiverton, has more than 100 care positions available and is asking anyone interested in switching professions to get in touch.

HomeLife Regional Manager, Katie Jewell says: “It’s vital at the moment that we boost our team numbers to help cope with the possible demands to come as COVID-19 restrictions continue in some way. We have some staff self-isolating, as they have members of their own households with symptoms, but we’re currently coping well with the services we maintain. However, it’s essential we find more carers. We’ve been able to speed up our recruitment, shorten our induction process and can make our DBS applications quicker, thanks to Government intervention. We can also conduct online interviews over FaceTime, Zoom and Skype, preventing non-essential trips for potential new recruits.

“Our role in the community is as important as other frontline health care professions, as we’re helping keep the elderly and vulnerable safely in their own homes, as requested by the Government, while also protecting the NHS from demands on its resources.

“We have care worker vacancies for people looking for a career change in south, west, north and mid Devon. Being a carer is a very rewarding job and it’s not just something that is short-lived in terms of career longevity. It actually gives the right candidates the opportunity to create a long-term future for themselves and job security.

“Every successful applicant receives full training, which includes a company induction, first aid, information on dementia, health and safety, food safety, infection control, handling medication and moving and handling service users.

“We also offer the chance to gain qualifications and career progression to all our team members who show commitment, reliability and passion for their role. We provide a great support network for all of our carers too.”

HomeLife, which has teams operating across Devon, is looking to hire 100 new carers to provide care to its service users this year and is offering flexible and supported learning for those wishing to advance their careers.

“Being reliable is essential for anyone wishing to become a carer, as we look after the needs of vulnerable adults. Applicants also need to be even tempered and caring and must enjoy making a positive difference to people’s lives.

“Being patient, able to cope with change and having the ability to display empathy and warmth are also vital in our work.”

Katie and her team want to hear from kind, honest and reliable people who are considering making a career for themselves in the care industry and would like to find out more.

“No experience is necessary, just a willingness to care and to learn. We offer free, full training, which includes a company induction, first aid, information on dementia, health and safety, food safety, infection control, handling medication and moving and handling service users, with the opportunity to achieve industry-recognised qualifications after the initial six months probationary period.

“There are lots of opportunities for internal advancement for all our team members who show commitment, reliability and true passion. We provide a great support network for all of our carers too.

“We provide all our staff full paid training and shadowing before they start, and they have additional, on the job support from a local team 24/7. We give free uniforms and a national staff discount scheme for all major brands including Tesco, Primark and Argos. It also covers holidays and electrical goods.

We have jobs available all over Devon now with immediate start, no experience necessary, just a willingness to care and to learn.”

HomeLife delivers personalised home care supporting people wishing to stay living safely and comfortably in their own homes in south Devon.

It currently is searching for more honest and kind-hearted individuals to help add to its teams in the county.

Katie adds: “Being dependable is key to this role as people will be looking after the needs of vulnerable adults. Applicants also need to be even-tempered and caring and must enjoy making a positive difference to people’s lives.  Being patient, able to cope with change and having the ability to display empathy and warmth are also essential.”
