Face of Portsmouth - Dave Taylor

Published: 13th February 2018 15:29

Dave Taylor is the founder and chair of Losing My Site Charity UK which supports those who are visually impaired or blind. Born in Portsmouth, he has lived in Germany, Hong Kong and Ireland as his father was in the army. He started to lose his sight five years ago which led to him starting the Losing My Sight Magazine. Before that he worked in the security industry for 34 years.

What do you consider your biggest achievement so far in your career?

My biggest achievement so far I have to say is starting Losing My Sight Magazine which led me onto forming Losing My Sight Charity UK.

What has been the best thing to happen to you in the last year?

Now that is a difficult one to answer as so many things have happened.

On a personal note I was nominated as a Pioneer Campaigner of the year by RNIB.

On a more professional note I definitely would say starting my charity and seeing how we have changed lives over a short period of time, by giving the visually impaired and blind community in Portsmouth of working age who are unable to work confidence and a more independent life.

What do you want to happen in the next year?

I would like  to see the charity progress and reach out to more visually impaired and blind people in and around Portsmouth so we can continue our hard work which is all voluntary based.

Also we hope to remain in our new office that we moved into recently at The Fratton Community Centre but I am afraid this is all down to funding.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

In the next five years I would like to see myself and my charity expand in a way so that we are providing a valuable service not just for the visually impaired and blind community but also other sensory disabilities in and around Portsmouth.

We would like to remain at the Fratton Community Centre and work closely with them in anyway possible such as raising funds for a mini bus so that we can help the community who are not able to get out and about without assistance. Bringing the community closer through my charity with the help of The Fratton Community Centre is one of our goals.

What do you like doing in your spare time/to relax?

With the little spare time I have I like to take advantage of what sight I still have and take photographs. I am a regular at most home games at Fratton Park. I also try and spend as much time with family and friends as this is important to me.

What do you like about living/working in Portsmouth?

The main thing I like about living in Portsmouth is that we have a great football team with a die hard fan base. I also enjoy walking along the beach in the summer and the occasional visit to Gunwharf Quays.

What is your favourite place in Portsmouth?

My favourite place in Portsmouth is my home as it is full of memories and love.

What one thing do you think would make living in Portsmouth better?

The one thing I would like to improve in Portsmouth is help to eradicate  homelessness in the the city as it does not give visitors a good impression of our city.

Imagine yourself as a child. What would you say to your younger self?

I would most definitely tell my younger self is to follow your dreams and respect others as you would like to be respected yourself.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself that we might not know.

Wow, an interesting fact about myself that not as easy as you think, I met Tom Jones at Heathrow Airport once, he had a very strong hand shake too.
