Face of Portsmouth - Andy Gatenby

Published: 27th February 2018 15:28

Andy GatenbyAndy Gatenby is an ex-professional boxer turned actor. He retired from the ring in 2014 at the age of 27 after concerns about an eye injury. He then went on to drama school and has taken part in commercials, films and TV. He is best known for his role as a soldier in a 6 part BBC series called Special Forces.

What do you consider your biggest achievement so far in your career?

My biggest achievment so far would be playing Carry Stayner in Worlds Most Evil Killers. He’s currently on death row in America and it was a bit surreal thinking about him on death row whilst I was playing him for  television show. Its going to be on Sky and Virgin in April sometime so that will be my acting debut on television.

What has been the best thing to happen to you in the last year?

The best thing to happen to me in the last year was the birth of my little boy. Me and my wife have got a girl and a boy now so it's a perfect set.

What do you want to happen in the next year?

Things are really moving now on my acting career and I’ve got tunnel vision on my goals. I'm setting my sights on big feature films or television shows within the next year but who knows whats around the corner?

Where do you see yourself in five years' time?

In 5 years' time I’ve got no idea where I'll be. I literally take each day as it comes. Four years ago I was boxing professionally and now I'm acting professionally. I'm not a religious person but I always give thanks for another day.

What do you like doing in your spare time/to relax?

I very rarely get any downtime. I'm hectic 24/7. There's always something going on but when I do get a spare hour I love having siestas on the sofa.

What do you like about living/working in Portsmouth?

I'll never let anybody say a bad word about Portsmouth. I've been in every city along the south and Portsmouth is definitely one of the most desirable places to live. There is loads to do here.

What is your favourite place in Portsmouth?

My favourite place in Portsmouth is Gunwharf. I like taking my little girl to the cinema and then getting some food afterwards.

What one thing do you think would make living in Portsmouth better?

I think living in Portsmouth would be a lot better if they had better parking. I.m always getting parking tickets. It does my head in.

Imagine yourself as a child. What would you say to your younger self

If I could say anything to a younger me it would be that you can do what ever you want in life if you want it bad enough. You will get it and not to worry about people doubting you - that only makes the victory even sweeter.

Tell us an interesting fact about you that we might not know

I'm an ambassador of the Amelia Mae Foundation. They help children and their families fighting neuroblastoma. It's a terrible children's cancer.  Last year I learnt to swim with my mate, Billy McCance. We had swimming lessons for six weeks and then, with another ten swimmers, we swam to the Isle of wight - well some doggy paddled and some splashed about a lot but we got there and raised over £10,000. This May were trekking the Great Wall of China to raise funds for the charity
