Lilly's Set for a Magical Future

Author: Haley Storey Published: 7th September 2017 14:29

Lilly MillerWhen Lily Miller got a magic set for Christmas at the age of 7, little did she know that it was a glimpse into her future career.

Now at the age of 24, the Portsmouth-based magician goes by the name of Lilly Morello and, as well as performing at weddings, parties and various venues across the city, Lilly has branched out and is now part of a double act currently showing in Portsmouth.

"As soon as I got my magic set, I was like 'look at this' to everyone but my dad was literally the only person who would tolerate me."

As Lilly went through secondary school and magic wasn't what the cool kids did, she took a break from her hobby. It wasn't until she was 18 that she rediscovered her love of it.

"I really wanted to try and do things again but it was really hard because I didn't know anyone else who did it."

Lilly said that it was her partner who finally persuaded her to go for it.

"She kind of pushed me and said 'come on, you can do this, you're really good' and then I thought, why not, you only get one life."

Now her dream is to make it her full-time career and she is on her way to putting her current day job as a supermarket checkout operator behind her.

Although the number of female magicians are growing, the business was originally dominated by men. In fact, it was only in 1991 that women were allowed into the Magic Circle, an organisation dedicated to promoting and advancing the art of magic. Lilly said she is building up her confidence to audition for membership.

She said, "One of the first ladies in the Magic Circle was Fay Presto. She paved the way for women to get in and now anyone can join. They are all so lovely there so I need to get my stuff together and go and do it."

In fact, Lilly says that being female has actually helped in her career as people take notice. She said, "It's nice because people are usually very receptive. I have had a few people say that it's a man's job but anyone can do it. It's the 21st century. Generally people are so lovely."

Lilly is currently working with fellow magician Tom Brooks on a show called Gaslight Tales. They met through a Facebook page for magicians and are performing their Victorian magic show with a spooky twist at the Wymering Manor on the 1st October. Lilly says it is a Halloween Horror style show and they will also be at the Wave Maiden as well as other venues who they are in talks with.

Lilly's future looks magical as she is performing at England's largest arts festival, the Brighton Fringe, next year and from July she wants to go it alone across the UK.

She said, "My long term plan is to start touring with my show and do magic full-time.

"All I want to do is magic."
