Pompey From the Press Box

Author: Alex Jones Published: 11th August 2014 20:39

"I love hopefully painting a picture to those listening; the immediacy of the action and the passion as a commentary team we feel," enthuses Dan Windle, familiar to Pompey fans as a voice of matchday radio coverage of Portsmouth FC in recent years.

Windle and colleagues have been preparing for another competitive campaign watching from the press box after a partnership between the city's community football club and community radio station, Express FM, was renewed.  Match commentary is broadcast online via subscription and free to air locally on 93.7FM.

Windle, 24, is embarking upon a third season as lead presenter on ‘Pompey Live', the programme title retained throughout changes of personnel, platforms, providers and even radio stations.

The 2014-15 season will be a second successive League Two campaign and the second to start under fan-led ownership. After Pompey's tips for promotion last time out didn't come to fruition, Windle- who has reported on the club's dismal on and off-field fortunes in recent years - has mixed thoughts ahead of the first match at Fratton Park this term. "My heart says with the squad compiled by [manager] Andy Awford plus the ‘Awford factor' playing a role galvanising the club and city, the side should only look up the league.

"My head is concerned with the role expectation can play," says the Blues fan who occupies a self-confessed ‘dream role' covering Pompey. "One thing is for sure, the start to the season is huge. A decent start with a good return of points as momentum builds hopefully could make Fratton Park unplayable for away sides."

The continuing commitment to broadcast matchday coverage as well as its in-house ‘Football Hour' strand is undoubtedly important to the radio station too which aims to cover every aspect of life in the city. "This will be our fifth season supporting the club and the relationship has gone from strength to strength," said Express' station director Cheryl Buggy when the deal's extension was announced earlier this summer. "It's great that Express is part of the PFC
family."

For a second successive season, supporters not local to the area can listen online via the Pompey Player, a Portsmouth-specific version of a model employed from the Premier League to non-league which provides subscribers with exclusive video content as well as the matchday audio offering. Prior to last season, availability of coverage online had been irregular and at times non-existent. Its importance is evident to Windle:"To be able broadcast online commentary to those all over the globe unable get their Pompey fix any other way is fantastic."

The man who terms the role "a pleasure and honour" to undertake will, in the most part, be accompanied by journalist Dave ‘Bunky' Bowers and former Portsmouth goalkeeper Alan ‘The Legend' Knight in a repeat of last year's line-up.

Calling the action whichever way it goes, Windle will be hoping not to share his cautious note "that word expectation could haunt Pompey once more" too often on the stereo in the months ahead.

‘Pompey Live' is produced by Portsmouth FC and 93.7 Express FM. Saturday matchdays 2pm & evening matchdays 7pm.

As a fan of pompey for many years .We had to listen to the local bbc sport.for pompey games and I must say it was not the best. For supporting pompey. So when express FM took on the games it was much better from a Local point of view. And I wood like to see express FM broadcasting the pompey games for many a years to come.
