Towcestrians came up agonisingly short against a strong Peterborough outfit in this hard fought and exciting league encounter, Tows outscoring the visitors by four ties to two but ultimately undone by lack of discipline and Boro's power up front.

Early warning of the accuracy of Peterborough's fly-half, Matty Newman, with the boot was given in the first minute, slotting a penalty to take the lead. Under pressure from the first scrum in the tight, and playing into a stiff wind, Tows elected to run the ball which lead to some thrilling passages of play, Tom Threlfall going over for a try for Tows, but mistakes in tricky conditions as Tows tried to force the pace were compounded by giving away penalties when defending and Boro's Newman took advantage by kicking two more from long range to lead again 5 - 9.

As Boro continued to exert pressure up front, a series of scrum penalties, gave the visitors the platform to attack, after strong defence from Tows the line was eventually broken after a looping pass found the Boro winger to cross in the corner, none of the large VP's lunch crowd were surprised when that was also converted from the touchline by Newman, Tows responded again as Threlfall went over for his second try off the back of a line out for Tows to be very much in touch at 10 - 16 with the wind at their backs for the second half.

Tows scrum worries continued early in the second half as prop Dave Gowler was yellow carded for persistent penalties, but Tows managed to close the gap despite that, with a long range penalty from Ben Roe. Peterborough were soon back in control though, a line out steal saw them crash over the Tows line again converted to extend the lead to 13 - 23, Tows worked hard for the final twenty to try and rescue the game, continuing to run the ball at every available opportunity, some good work in the backs released Pepe Nanci to go in for an unconverted try, Boro again hit back with a fourth penalty from Newman, before Tows produced a dazzling score, a poor clearance kick found the covering Nanci, who danced through two tackles and then offloaded to Tows back rower Callum Jones, who timed his line and run perfectly, to gather the ball at pace and out sprint the defence from thirty metres for a try, converedt to close the gap to a single point with a minute or so left, despite thier best efforts Tows could not find a winning score, coming up just short but picking up both a try scoring and a losing bonus point.

Tows 3rd XV saw off Peterborough 2nd XV 19 - 10 and Tows Colts played Boro's Colts downing them 39 - 0

Tows defence of the Alliance Cup continues on Tuesday night as they play away at last years runners up, Old Northamptonians under the lights at Northampton School for Boys (NSB)
