Girls at Towcester Centurions Rugby launched a Christmas collection of sanitary products on the 6th December, in a bid to help improve period poverty.

The 2019 Christmas Charitable Collection has been organised across all the club’s age groups this year (ages 10-18) and they are asking for donations of sanitary products tampons, pads and towels.

A survey by Plan International UK found that one in 10 (10%) of girls have been unable to afford sanitary products. The survey of 14 to 21-year old's also found that:

  • 15% have also struggled to afford sanitary wear.
  • 14% have had to ask to borrow sanitary wear from a friend due to affordability issues.
  • 12% has had to improvise sanitary wear due to affordability issues.
  • 19% of girls have changed to a less suitable sanitary product due to cost.

Team manager Donna Cockerill said that “Working on the front line in women’s services I see and hear some very sad stories. I’d like our girls to be aware of how a little help can go a long way to help other women feel valued and supported. We’ll send all donations to our local food banks.”

She added: “They are a diverse group of young women who play rugby at Towcestrians and they have come together and formed friendships through the love of the game. We have a short promotional video and local social media campaign which was launched a few days ago and has already had over 2,000 views.”

“We have been delighted by everyone's response and we’d love to see as many donations as possible. There are collection points in and around Towcester and further afield in South Northants and at Northampton General Hospital.

Donation Points:

  • The Butchers Arms, Greens Norton
  • Towcestrians RFC, Greens Norton Rd, Towcester
