AYME has a UK-wide helpline and National Support Worker providing support and information to children and young people with the debilitating, painful and isolating condition Myalgic Encephalopathy/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, ME/CFS. There are an estimated 25,000 children and young people diagnosed with ME/CFS in the UK.AYME offers peer support services, including online message board, buddies and local meet-ups help reduce the social exclusion caused by being housebound and unable to join in with their peers.
AYME provides advocacy to families in crisis, for example, where ill informed doctors, education welfare officers or social workers threaten child protection proceedings due to misunderstanding and ignorance about the condition.
AYME also runs a volunteering programme for young people to regain lost confidence and self esteem and gain experience and skills, despite missing out on school qualifications.
