Grafton District Scout Band
Published: 27th March 2009 20:23 |
Are a Scout marching band based in the Grafton Scout District.
Open to anyone involved in Scouting between the ages of 8 and 25 years.
Meeting on a weekly basis every Sunday afternoon. The location for the meetings will rotate around the district to ensure no members have to travel an unreasonable distance all year round.
Instruments
We have 4 instrument sections.
- Woodwind
- Brass
- Tuned Percussion (bell lyres, flat bed bells, marimba and xylophone)
- Percussion (drums, cymbals)
Band members are encouraged to use their own instruments if they have them, we do however have a small selection of instruments available for use.
History of the Band
Recognising the need for a Scout Band in the Grafton District, a group of local members of the scouting community and ex-scout marching band members set one up. The band is still new, forming in February 2008.
All our founding members have experience of being in a Scout Marching band and of Scouting, so, although we are new, we have a great wealth of experience that can help to ensure that the band environment is fun but professional.
Current Band Activities
A typical band meeting runs something like this...
- Fall in & Agenda for the evening
- Warm up tunes (practice for familiar tunes)
- Section Work
- Break
- Drill practice and close
- Play together to practice new tunes
We ask members to make an annual contribution of £30 towards the band expenses, however, you can come along a try it out for free to make sure you like it before we ask for any commitment.
Our uniform (to be provided by band members) is worn during public apprearances and consists of:
- Scout Shirt (for formal occasions)
- Navy Blue Polo Shirt (for informal occasions)
- Navy Blue Trousers
- Black Shoes
At regular meetings we ask you to wear the polo shirt & a necker, however, you can wear any dark blue, plain trousers and any shoes as long as they are suitable for marching.
We also arrange fun activity days for all members.
TYMBA
In 2009 we became members of TYMBA the Traditional Youth Marching Band Association. TYMBA is an organisation who cater specifically for youth bands, which project a traditional British image and adopt a British Military style of drill.
You can find out more about TYMBA by visiting their website www.tymba.org.uk
Future of the Band
We have now been graded at a level D and we are able to play at public events such as Steam Rallies, Carnivals, Rememberance Day Parades and Christmas events.
