Rose and Castle Morris

Published: 3rd May 2007 17:16

The side was formed in the village of Blisworth in 1977 to dance traditional Clog dances originating from the Lancashire and Cheshire regions of the North West of England.

The association between the village and the North West is, of course, the Grand Junction Canal (later renamed the Grand Union Canal). The Rose and Castle motif is frequently seen decorating the Narrow Boats, and this association gives the side its name.

The design is carried on the side's Bass Drum and is embroidered into the waistcoats of the Band.

More recently, the side has based itself at the Boat Inn, Stoke Bruerne. Almost opposite the Boat Inn is the canal museum. So our association with the waterways goes on.

Since being formed the side has participated in many functions throughout the country and has visited international events in France and Belgium.

Meetings

The side meets at Stoke Bruerne Village Hall from 8-30pm to 10pm every Wednesday outside
the summer dancing season, and thereafter foregather in the Boat, and welcome new (male) dancers of any ability and none, and musicians of either sex.

Rose and Castle Morris are always looking for new members and if you are interested in seeing whether you would like to join, why not come along to a practice night (Wednesdays) at Stoke Bruerne Village Hall. You will be warmly welcomed. However, for those who are not too sure, we are running an evening class in Milton Keynes for 5 weeks starting on Thursday, 28 February, 2008. Further information can be obtained from Milton Keynes Adult Continuing Education
