Message in a Bottle

Published: 24th October 2007 10:15

Lions LifelineLions Lifeline sometimes called Message in a Bottle. The Northamptonshire Welfare Group has teamed up with the county’s Lions Clubs to promote their Lions Lifeline: a message in a bottle scheme.

The Northamptonshire Welfare Group is made up of various organisations that have a role to play in the event of an emergency or major incident, including Northamptonshire County Council, district and borough councils, health services, emergency services and voluntary groups.

Message in a Bottle is a simple idea and all vulnerable people living on their own in Northamptonshire are being urged to keep some basic personal and medical information in a common place where emergency services can find it quickly.

The message is a simple form that includes details of their doctor, key phone numbers and addresses, current medication and allergies. The bottle is a white container with a green top that has an easily recognisable green cross symbol on the front. The message is kept in the bottle and the bottle is kept in the fridge.

Included are two green cross symbol stickers, one which the householder places on the rear of their front door and the other on the front of their fridge, indicating to the emergency services that a Message in a Bottle is available and where it is located.

The Northamptonshire Lions Clubs are funding the supply of the bottles free of charge through their local fundraising efforts. To date some 30,000 bottles have been distributed through health centres, GP surgeries, pharmacies, voluntary community care organisations and are now also available from your local library.

Councillor Liz Tavener, Northamptonshire County Council cabinet member for community safety said: “Like all the best ideas, the Message in a Bottle initiative is a very simple concept. And like all the best ideas, it could make a huge difference.

“Knowing what medication a person is taking, the nature of any illness or disability or who to contact in an emergency can be critical in getting the right help and assistance to people in a crisis or emergency.”
