Eleven children from four local schools won prizes and certificates at a ceremony held at Towcester Library on Thursday July 14th in front of proud parents and family. The children were the winners of a competition to write a fictional story entitled "Quick! The wounded have arrived", organised as part of the Towcester Area WW1 Commemoration programme by Towcester and District Local History Society.
The 125 entries were divided into two section, for primary and secondary schools. The panel of ten judges found it very hard to make their decisions because of the high standard of the entries.
All the senior section entries were from Sponne School. The first prize was awarded to Matthew Evans, the second prize to Harvey Taylor, and three other prizes were awarded for the specially commended stories from Ben Pearce, Emelia Reeve and Elin West.
The winner of the junior section was Erin Taylor (Paulerspury School) and the second prize went to Leah Mansell (Nicholas Hawksmoor School). The specially commended stories came from Thea Bates and Esmée Lowery (both from Blakesley School) and Amie Reynolds and Devan Vara (both from Nicholas Hawksmoor school).
John Morris, the chairman of the organising committee, was away so Don Martin hosted the meeting.
The prizes, of Waterstone’s gift cards, were sponsored by the Towcester and District Local History Society. Towcester Library were extremely helpful, accepting the entries, providing two judges and organising the awards ceremony.
The judges were John Morris, David Wilcock, Don Martin, Juris Trede, and Pat Easto from the Towcester and District Local History Society; Phil Hemming and Lindsay Westley from Towcester Library; Martin Johns from Towcester Museum; Martin MarixEvans, a historian and author; and Revd Ben Phillips, the Rector of St. Lawrence Church, Towcester.
