Megastar rock band U2 have announced a world tour for 2015. Called Innocence + Experience, the tour is in support of their latest album Songs of Innocence and dates so far include North America, Europe and the UK.
The band are famed for the hi-tech, high-cost visuals used at all their concerts. Their last tour, “360” visited enormous stadiums around the world and incorporated giant screens and spectacular pyrotechnics as a backdrop to their music.
The plans for Innocence + Experience are slightly more muted—although with a band the size of U2, such statements are relative.
Bassist Adam Clayton told Rolling Stone magazine that the tour would feature a departure from the usual live setup:
“One night would be a kind of loud, explosive rock’n’roll kind of event and then the other night’s show take the acoustic arrangements of some of the songs, and kind of present those songs in a much more intimate way.”
The tour is bound to be a real treat for all U2 fans, then—of which, almost 40 years into their career, there are still many.
Thanks to an innovative—and, some might say, controversial—method of marketing Songs of Innocence, in which the album was placed by Apple into the library of every iTunes user, the album has been downloaded over 26 million times. Those figures make it one of the most popular albums of all time.
Despite frontman Bono being involved in a cycling accident recently, he should be well enough for the tour to go ahead as planned.
North America should get the first taste of Innocence + Experience, starting in May. After a short break in August, U2 arrive in Europe in September. The only cities in the UK to have dates announced so far are London (with four nights scheduled) and Glasgow, beginning late October.
