Towcester Racing Preview For Thursday

THE form of Venetia Williams has been nothing short of remarkable since her horses announced their well-being with a long-priced Saturday double at Ascot in early November and the Herefordshire handler can make her presence felt at Towcester on Thursday if the fixture beats the current wet spell.

Williams, based at Kings Caple near Ross On Wye, has been able to boast a sturdy reputation at Towcester in recent years and her current form is equally as impressive, as she stands at eighth in the national jump trainers’ table with 50 winners at a strike rate of 17 per cent.

Her horses appear to have a natural empathy for dealing with the sort of heavy ground which has become a trade mark for the current campaign and her name leapt off the page when taking an initial glance at entries for this week’s Towcester card which would undoubtedly take place on heavy ground if it went ahead.

No fewer than nine of the 91 five-day entries were accountable to Williams, only Nigel Twiston-Davies coming close to that with six.

Williams has already sent out two horses: previous course winner Gorgehous Lliege in December and Tidal Dance at the recent Sunday meeting, to score at Towcester this season. Given the rest of the world is not entirely oblivious to the trainer’s red hot streak the odds on her horses may not always appear attractive, but pure mathematics suggests they cannot be ignored.

Among her entries for Thursday is the eight year-old grey chaser Gorgehous Lliege who is a three-times course winner at Towcester following his latest success, while he was also second on his only other appearance at the track.

Three entries registered for the 2m handicap hurdle including recent Warwick winner Dungeness, Santo Thomas and The Clock Leary suggests her camp will be competitive in an event when Twoways, a winner at Towcester only 11 days ago, could be the one to beat while Williams is also double-handed in the 2m National Hunt novices’ hurdle with dual recent winner Bobbie Boru and Call Carlo.

Culworth trainer Tony Middleton ended a frustrating run of second places when Fitandproperjob took the amateur and conditional riders’ ‘hands and heels’ chase at Leicester last week and he could be on the mark with Lough Coi in the Haygain Hay Steamers Clean Healthy Forage Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Chase which is due to take place at 3.50pm.

Following Thursday’s fixture, Towcester is due to race again on Sunday February 23 when the first race is due off at 2pm.
