Overhead Power Cables Go

Trevor Protheroe from Western Power Distributors is ready to remove the overhead electricity cabling shown in the background.
Around our village green there were many overhead power cables supplying electricity not only to nearby homes but to street lights provided, owned and paid for by our Parish Council from its precept. We local people seemed to blot out the sight of those ugly wires from our minds and only appreciated the lovely village scene of ancient stone buildings and colourful gardens. June Willsher a local artist explained that when she painted a scene of that corner of the village for a community Christmas card she simply erased the cables from her work.
Bob Carter our Parish Clerk stated that one of the metal poles that supported a street light had become very rusty and had to be removed for safety reasons. As a consequence all electricity supplies to that section of the village were routed underground.
Trevor Protheroe and a team of engineers from Western Power Distributors descended on the village recently to remove the now obsolete overhead cables. They worked skilfully and speedily. Now many of us notice that the cables are missing. Perhaps we saw them more that we thought? But as my friend Steve Andrews pointed out as we walked to the pub for our Sunday lunchtime pint of Hooky – It looks much nicer now!
