The buses of time gone by... and nowThe buses of time gone by... and now

Saturday, 21st July 2018, was the last day of the County Connect bus service to Wappenham.

Writing to AboutMyArea/NN12 Jane Harries of Wappenham said, "Ironically, I was presented that very day with a bus timetable for Lawrence's Bus Services, serving Wappenham and surrounding villages, by Bridget Haynes, wife of Charlie who used to live in Wappenham.  Thank you very much, Charlie - this is now a timely piece of history!

"Four bus routes served Wappenham - one to Towcester and Northampton via Abthorpe goes four times a day on Wednesdays, 5 on Saturdays and twice on Sundays.

"Two routes go to Greens Norton, Towcester and Northampton, one on a Thursday evening (is this a date night? market night?) and one three times each Weds and Saturdays.

"Lastly there are three services serving Banbury, all on Thursdays (this must be market day).

"Have a look at the ads round the edge - the pubs have comic verse about drink.  As the Bull Inn is open this must be pre 1960s?

"The beers are Hopcraft & Norris's 'Famous Ales' and ABC 'Noted Ales'.

"Bridget said she met her future husband Charlie on the bus - she was working as a nanny at Weston and going to the pictures in Towcester (when Towcester had a cinema) and Charlie was going there too.

"I believe other couples round here have also met on the buses - no need for online dating then.

"With widespread car use, these buses have ceased to be.

"But what if you are stuck without a car for whatever reason?  Fortunately our parish councils and meetings in Wappenham, Abthorpe, Slapton and Bradden, led by Marna Perrigo of Abthorpe, are putting their heads together to find a way we can still have some kind of community transport, .

"Thank you for your support for this - we may all need it one day!"
