QUEENOHEARTS lit up Towcester’s Christmas meeting with a scintillating final race success in the bumper to inspire thoughts of an attractive date in the spring.

The four year-old Stuart Edmunds-trained daughter of Flemensfirth ran out a 5/1 winner by five lengths from Pineapple Rush in the hands of jockey Ciaran Gethings, with Midnightreferendum back in third.

This was only her second ever venture onto a racecourse and prompted discussion of a plan to go to Sandown Park on the Saturday before the Cheltenham Festival.

Gethings said: “She is talented and has a great attitude. She ran really well in a hot race at Chepstow on her debut and is one for the future.”

Local Cropredy Lawn trainer Paul Webber has had winners at each of the Towcester fixtures since October after the 40/1 victory of Miss Tongabezi in the 2m 5 1/2f novices’ limited handicap chase.

Miss Tongabezi runs in the colours of Diana Webber and is descended from the line of Auntie Dot, the mare which ran third to Seagram in the 1991 Grand National, one place ahead of Over The Road which was ridden by Robbie Supple, the starter at this Towcester fixture.

Lacey’s Towcester jockey Tommie O’Brien had also been on board the successful Thistle Do Nicely at Towcester’s November meeting.

Bob Buckler’s veteran 12 year-old chaser Ballyegan specialises in victories at Taunton and Towcester and he notched a third win at the latter track in the 2m 4f handicap chase under Sean Houlihan, toughing it out from the front.

There as a remarkable finish to the 2m 5f novices’ hurdle as the Fergal O’Brien-trained Pauls Hill under Paddy Brennan came from a mile back to snatch an unlikely success from 4/11 favourite Tommy Rapper by a head.

The day had opened with the Alan King-trained Al Shahir (6/4 fav) taking the novices’ hurdle under Harry Skelton while a successful combination of Nicky Henderson/Nico de Boinville took the honours with Rather Be (8/11 fav) in the novices’ chase.
