What is “Hours 4 Ours” all about?

August sees the launch of the biggest community improvement initiative in recent years, it is not a political movement, it is not driven by individual cause group, it is an all-embracing initiative designed to deliver improvement at grass-roots level within local communities across the UK

Where does the name come from?

Quite simply this is one of those ‘does what it says on the tin’ ideas – AboutMyArea is a national network of locally-run community websites, who will be engaged in using and developing their local community contacts to donate their time and effort to improve their local community; i.e hours of good work for our local community.

Who is behind it?

AboutMyArea.co.uk is one of the largest networks of Community website networks in the UK

How does it work?

With over 300 postcode areas covered across the UK by AboutMyArea, every franchisee will be actively encouraged to identify local community projects in need of assistance – this could be anything from picking up litter in the park, clearing chewing gum in the High Street, cutting grass on unadopted pieces of public ground, re-felting the scout hut, painting the local Old People’s home, etc – many of these projects will have failed to receive lottery funding, and could be beyond the means of local councils.

What is the main aim of this project?

To genuinely benefit local communities across the UK by collectively generating 1 million hours of voluntary help from local people.

What is meant by ‘community projects?’

The aim is to assist small local clubs, associations, societies and public facilities to raise their profile within the local community and help with their on-going projects. It is not intended to help overtly commercial organisations to ‘get work done for free!’.

Who can get involved?

The idea is that anyone can lend a hand in some way, within reason; obviously if there is a construction or demolition job to be performed, properly trained staff will be asked to donate their time in return for coverage on the website, and all Health & Safety regulations will be followed.

How do I apply?

Each AboutMyArea website will contain information about how to nominate a project or volunteer help or materials

How can I get involved?

Once you have volunteered, your local AboutMyArea website will contain details of specific projects in your area. The websites will also contain photos of the progress of each project.

How can I sponsor the event?

On a local level local companies can sponsor/support a project by donating staff time to help out, or transport and materials to use on the project. Whilst our intent is to generate 1 million hours of local community help, we are confident that this will be the first of many millions of on-going Hours 4 Ours campaigns, and we will be seeking a number of national partners for future initiatives.

Will it cost me anything?

Just your time. It’s more fun if you can get a group of friends to help out at the same time, so feel free to spread the word.

How long is the project continuing for?

Each month a project will be chosen by each AboutMyArea Site Editor, and all focus will be on making that project happen in that area. In addition to this details will go into a draw at AboutMyArea head office, and one project will also have a team of volunteers at head office helping out for a day in the chosen area.

Where can I find out more information?
