More than 250 people turned out in hail, rain, sleet and snow to raise more than £3,500 for five-year-old Lewis Wares at the 25-hour football extravaganza last weekend (16-17 March).

The event was run by Towcester Town Football Club, in partnership with South Northants Leisure Trust, to celebrate its 25th anniversary and help fund Lewis’s life-changing surgery in the US this summer.

People aged between 3 and 60 from all around Towcester and the surrounding area took part in hour-long games, which ran from 9am on Saturday through to 10am on Sunday morning, at Towcester Centre for Leisure.

Many of the Towcester Town age groups took part and they were joined throughout the day by Silverstone FC, St John’s Ambulance, The Peacock FC, Woodford United FC and a debut performance for the Towcester Football Mums team, including Lewis’s mum Emma.

At 10pm on Saturday, Towcester Old Boys and their guests continued the event indoors with a gruelling 10-hour overnight five-a-side challenge.

The final two hours then moved back outside, with more Towcester Juniors completing the marathon in the snow, supported by Northampton Town Football Club mascot Clarence.

Organiser Tony Pickworth said: “Towcester Town would like to thank all their supporters and sponsors for their generosity and say a massive thank you to everyone who took part to make this such a great occasion. All our support and best wishes now go to Lewis and the Wares family.”

Fun-loving five-year-old Lewis has a condition which presents as diplegic cerebral palsy and is eligible for an operation in America called a Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy, which could help him to walk on his own. Lewis has now been accepted for the procedure and is hoping to fly to the US in the summer.

Last year the boy’s grandfather enlisted the help of 80s pop idols Paul Young and Tony Hadley to produce the Happy Birthday JC Christmas single, with all proceeds going towards the cause.

Further events are taking place over the coming months to help move Lewis closer to his goal. For more information or to make a donation please contact Emma Wares on 07967 106 046 or email mrswares@me.com
