Richard has these top tips:

  • Work out Regularly:  It is important that each session be an effective one rather than just a long session, but aim to increase the time (cardiovascular) of each session over a fortnightly basis.
  • Combine the Exercises: In each session you should aim to work all your muscle groups.  This means as well as cardiovascular exercises (jogging/ stepping) resistance (weights) should also be added into every session.
  • Try New Exercises: If you continue to follow the same fitness programme for longer than 6 weeks your body will become use to the exercises and you will stop seeing results.  Instead of just attending classes or heading to the gym try combing the two! It will make your workouts more interesting and certain muscles will get worked in a different way.
  • Workout at Home: Just because you could not make it to the gym/ club for a workout does not mean you can not exercise at all! Do something at home or go outside for a walk or jog.
  • Have a Balanced Diet: There is no point burning the calories if your intake is higher than your expenditure.  Monitor what and how much you are eating per day.  You need to have a healthy diet to see any results.
  • Ask For Help: Having a fitness instructor/ personal trainer can really help.  It can be the motivation you need to push yourself harder than you thought you could. Every session will be different but designed specifically for what you want/ need.  With advice on diet you will achieve your goals and see results a lot quicker.
  • Set Realistic Goals: The key to success and keeping yourself motivated is to set yourself small and realistic goals.  Just by doing an extra minute on the treadmill every week or lifting an extra 2.5kg on the bench press each week you will see progression and feel great.
  • Use The Buddy System: If you can find someone who shares similar fitness goals to you, you will be more motivated and able to support/ push each other on those days when you rather be sitting at home.
  • Keep Moving: Try to keep yourself moving physically as much as possible i.e. use the stairs at work instead of the easy option of the lift, park further away from work so you have to walk longer or quicken the pace of the walk.  If you are at home walk the dog more often or find more jobs to do around the house.  Always try to add physical activity to your life.
  • Be Patient: You never know what life will throw at you! There will be successes and there will also be set-backs with fitness, but if you stick with it and do not lose heart you will see results and live a healthier life.
