The regeneration of Towcester looks set to take another significant step forward this week with the announcement by South Northamptonshire Council (SNC) that further archaeological work along with some demolition work will begin on Tuesday, 2 April.
The original archaeological investigations last summer did not identify any significant finds and the latest digs, which have been agreed with the county archaeologist, will be carried out by Cotswold Archaeology and take around 10 weeks. This will involve comprehensive excavation and recording to provide a lasting record of archaeological evidence before the building phase begins. This is normal procedure for developments of this kind.
The demolitions will include the old garage and tanks on Northampton Road along with the boundary wall, the old print works on Whittons Lane, the large shed and small buildings adjacent to the Mill House and some walls to the rear of various properties on Watling Street. These works will enable the future phases of the Moat Lane development including the new flagship community building and infrastructure for the entire site.
Councillor Rupert Fordham, portfolio holder for economic development and regeneration, said: “Pushing on with the demolition and additional archaeological works is a high priority for us and the local community in the first phase of work at Moat Lane.
“There will be inevitable disruption to some services as the contractors carry out the work but we will seek to minimise the problems for access etc for cars, deliveries and pedestrians to the town centre.
“We’re confident that the plans for Moat Lane will soon see a very positive transformation and help to regenerate this run down part of Towcester into an area that is attractive and vibrant bringing new economic opportunities for residents and traders alike.”

It is what it is, a modern building to house the relocated SNC offices, unpopular with many it Towcester and also with residents of some other villages.
Surprised that the scheme is also progressing without the parking issues being resolved, although the architeral works will be interesting to show what is, or was, still there.
