Much needed allotments in Towcester came one step closer to fruition after South Northamptonshire Council (SNC) granted permission for a utilities compound and car park as part of the Sustainable Urban Extension (SUE) of the town.
On Thursday, 9 February 2017, members of SNC’s planning committee approved a reserved matters application for the site located off the A5, just south of the Folly Inn.
The site forms part of the Towcester SUE which includes 2,750 new homes, education, health, leisure, retail and employment space, as well as the Towcester A5 relief road.
Cllr Roger Clarke, SNC’s portfolio holder for planning and environment said: “There is a well-established need for allotment space in the town, and while there will be some disruption as the SUE unfolds, this is yet another sign that the plan was forward thinking and took account of residents’ wishes.”
The reserved matter applications includes the demolition of some agricultural buildings to make way for a gas pumping station, fibre optic cabinets, water mains booster pump and 15 parking spaces with suitable landscaping and security barriers.
A separate application will be submitted in due course for the allotments themselves.

That is one way to spin it.
This application is providing utilities for the planned new homes only, plus some car parking space which will probably be used during much of the development phase.
The allotments will probably be last thing that gets delivered, possibly even some 10 years down the line when much of the rest of the SUE is built.
