A family run engineering firm born out of the Formula One industry has been given room to grow in Towcester after their multi-million-pound expansion plans received planning permission last week.

In 1997 Colin McGrory founded Sandwell UK Ltd in a stable block on the Easton Neston Estate after he decided he could improve the quality of products he received as an employee of the Stewart Grand Prix F1 team (now Redbull).

On Thursday, 6 December 2018 Sandwell’s plans to construct a new unit off Foundry Place in Towcester to house new equipment and research facilities were given the go ahead by the South Northamptonshire Council’s (SNC) Planning Committee.

Mr McGrory said: “Sandwell has a dedicated local workforce many of whom walk and cycle to work and hence it was crucial for the business to remain in Towcester.

“This development will add another six full-time positions and two part-time in order for Sandwell to develop into new markets and build on its established links with F1 teams and high end engineering companies.”

Cllr Roger Clarke, SNC’s portfolio holder for Planning, said: “A high-tech, locally grown firm investing and creating jobs in a corner of Towcester identified for employment.

“This is a perfect example of what an open for business approach and good planning policy can achieve.

“I congratulate Sandwell and look forward to hearing about their future successes.”

Sandwell specialise in surface treatments of materials to improve strength and appearance, reduce friction and remove contaminants, and their services are utilised by a range of sectors including motorsport, medicine, oil and gas, aerospace and electronics.
