Hangover Cures - what works for you?

Published: 16th November 2011 10:45

It's the time of year when we all over indulge a little.  If you feel like someone's dropped a ten ton weight on your head the morning after, why not try one of the following cures, it may help (although not guaranteed!)

FRY-UP

hangoverAfter a hard night, your digestive system is under a lot of strain and needs an energy boost.  A fry up contains lots of calories and therefore will achieve this.  Eggs and meat are also rich in Cysteine (an amino acid) which is thought to be good at cleansing the body of toxins.

HAIR OF THE DOG

This is proven to work - but only in the short term.  You can suspend the torture of your hangover with a new intake of booze, but as soon as you finish drinking again your hangover will return - probably not worth the bother.

PAINKILLERS

You can try 500 - 1000mgs of asprin (if you can take) along with a rehydrating sports drink, which should help your head a little.

WATER

We get hungover because we are dehydrated, therefore we need to rehydrate our bodies, obviously drinking water does this.  It's best to drink plenty of water before going to bed, but if like me, you forget, try drinking a pint every hour after you wake.

FRUIT JUICE

One I swear by - The best sort is freshly squeezed which replaces lost vitamins and the natural sugar in the juice will also boost your energy levels and can help get rid of the toxins in your body.  If you haven't any freshly squeezed any fruit juice is better than none.

SLEEP

Another one I love - Try and sleep as much as possible, your body will restore itself much better when you are sleeping.

CAFFINE

Some swear by black coffee, which will help, but only in the short term as caffine dehydrates you just like alcohol.

Prevention is better than Cure

If you are going out drinking here are some tips to try before you go out that may help keep your hangover at bay

FOOD

Eat before you go out - Don't drink on an empty stomach.  Food will soak up some of the alcohol and slow down its absorption.

SOFT DRINKS

Try alternating your drinks between alcoholic and soft, this way you will be drinking less and therefore have a less severe hangover.

TOAST & BISCUITS

Try eating something before you go to bed - lack of sugar is the cause for that wobbly feeling we all get.  To get your blood sugar levels up try eating.  Although toast or a dry biscuit is great eating anything will do.

MILK THISTLE

I know of many people who believe Milk Thistle to be the best prevention.  Try taking a couple of pills before going out, it may lessen the effects of your hangover.

WATER

If you can remember drink plenty of water before going to bed, this will rehydrate your body.
