On Monday 22nd February Willaston Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and their Leaders celebrated their World Thinking Day by sharing their memories of the past, the present and for the future.
On Monday evening, Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers and their Leaders from Willaston gathered together with specially invited Girlguiding guests from years gone by to celebrate both Girlguiding UK's 100th year and their World Thinking Day which takes place globally on the 22nd February every year.
To make the celebration even more memorable, 2nd Willaston Brownies were very lucky to be dressed in original Guiding costumes from decades past. There was a Rosebud (the very earliest Brownie) in her original blue dress from 1915, Brownies in their easily recognisable brown dresses from 1950's, 60's, 70's, a Jeff Banks uniform from the 1990's and the latest Ally Capellino designer uniform which the Brownies wear today. Two girls also wore original Guide costumes from 1910 and 1985 (the 75th anniversary of Girlguiding UK).
With specially decorated lit jars and glowsticks, over 100 girls held a candlelit procession through Willaston village and within Christ Church itself to create a wonderful memorable beginning to their World Thinking Day service.
To dimmed lights they paraded through church accompanied by Paul Heeney on acoustic guitar playing a specially commissioned song written for Girlguiding's Centenary called 'One World One Beat.'
During the service 1st Willaston Rainbows were very brave whilst they shared their favourite things telling the congregation what they enjoyed doing most at their Rainbow meetings. 1st Willaston Brownies delighted everyone by singing and performing their traditional Brownie opening song and Guides enchanted everyone with their rendition of "Edelweiss", a traditional well known guiding song from the past. 2nd Willaston Brownies looked to the future by sharing their vision of Girlguiding in 10 years time.
Special guest speaker Mrs Jane Bartlett held the audience enthralled whilst she shared her memories of her own Guiding in the village with everyone.
To conclude the girls sang 'One World One Beat,' almost lifting the church roof from its rafters before everyone returned to Willaston Memorial Hall to share more memories of their Guiding days.
Here everyone was treated to 100 celebratory cakes and special twit-twu biscuits made by Tawny Owl Anne Foulkes and her husband Jonathon.
Memories shared of the past, the present and created for the future too.
