Runaway brides leg it out of Chester to win dream Wedding

Published: 25th August 2010 12:05

Three runaway brides were seen racing out of Chester last Friday fighting to win a completely free dream wedding day and 7 night honeymoon cruise worth over £7,000 courtesy of Macdonald Craxton Wood Hotel, near Neston.

and Helen Smith (right) get set to chase dream wedding.

The leading wedding venue chose the three finalists following a public vote launched through Dee 106.3 FM. The bridal belles were tasked to get as far away from Chester as possible and return by 5pm the same day. Laura Morris from Blacon, Emma Burton from Ellesmere Port, and Helen Smith from Saltney set off through the city streets at 7am on Friday with no money, no help and wearing their wedding dress!

The runaway brides pleaded for train tickets, bus tickets, hire cars and even tried to hop in the back of a Royal Mail van for a lift. They caused quite a stir throughout the country, racing around and willing to beg, borrow and steal to win the wedding of their dreams.

At the end of the nail biting final on Friday, the winner, Emma Burton, sprinted through the finish line with just eight minutes to spare, having made it to South London and back with a little help from a pair of curious Chester onlookers. Business owners Mike from City Metals and Mark Golden of Dragon Tattoo Studio spotted runaway bride Emma walking out of Chester train station in her wedding dress after having no luck in persuading railway staff to help her in her escape. They stepped up and showed community spirit is alive and well in Chester and made an outstanding donation to help Emma on her way and paid for her return journey to London.

Helen Smith arrived back just ten minutes too late after bagging a lift to Scotland and Laura Morris was the first to cross the finish line, however was a little less fortunate than her competitor brides and travelled the least miles, to Wigan.

After travelling a staggering 218 miles Emma Burton and her partner Steve Ward from Ellesmere Port will enjoy their well deserved wedding day with their friends and family at the luxurious grounds of the Macdonald Craxton Wood Hotel followed by their first adventure as a married couple on a 7 night cruise to either the Caribbean, Europe, the African Coast or even Alaska.

Cassandra Forshaw, Regional Sales Manager of Macdonald Craxton Wood Hotel said: "Each finalist did really well and they all deserved this chance to win a wedding of their dreams. The public had a tough decision to choose the final three and we are now so happy for Emma and her partner Steve."

Emma reached the final after revealing that she was recently in a house fire and escaped with her partner and children. They lost everything apart from the pyjamas they had on.

Cassandra added: "We will be pulling out all the stops to make their big day a truly memorable experience from start to finish."

Emma said: "I'm so excited to have won, it was such a tough challenge on Friday but I gave it my best shot and thankfully won by the skin of my teeth. I really didn't think it would be possible for us to ever save for a wedding so to have won our day at the stunning Macdonald Craxton Wood Hotel really is a dream come true."
