Distraction burglary warning from Cheshire police

Cheshire Police are urging residents to look out for elderly and vulnerable neighbours following a number of 'distraction' type burglaries across the county.
Burglaries were reported in Warrington, Runcorn, Tarporley and in East Cheshire on Tuesday 17th May.
In Tarporley, an elderly lady resident of a house in Stapleford answered the door at around 8pm to a man who said he had lost his puppy and asked for access to the rear of her house. By distracting the victim, he went into her house and stole a significant amount of cash.
Detective Inspector Sharon Case, who heads up the Western Area Proactive CID said:
"I urge residents to be vigilant in respect of this type of crime, as the methods the thieves use are becoming increasingly unusual and diverse. A lot of people are aware of those who may attempt to gain access to their homes by purporting to be officials from a utility company, or offering to carry out gardening work.
"However yesterdays method of distracting the victim by pretending to search for a pet is an unusual approach that encourages innocent homeowners to feel sympathy for the situation and fall prey to this type of burglary.
"Contact Police if you notice anyone suspicious in your area, or if you are approached by a caller at your home that is unexpected or unusual. Any genuine caller to your house acting in an official capacity would be able to provide proof of their identity, which can be verified by calling the company and ensuring the caller is genuine. If you have elderly or vulnerable neighbours, keep an eye on them to ensure they aren't being targeted by the bogus callers."
