Neston's Rebecca Jones Wins a Young Good Citizen Award

Published: 17th May 2012 08:42

Rebecca Jones from Neston received one of 7 Young Good Citizens Award from the Lord Mayor of Chester, Councillor Eleanor Johnson, at an award ceremony in Chester on Saturday 12th May.

Rebecca received a certificate of recognition for her contribution to her local community after being nominated for her work with Guides, being a helper at Sunday school and also her work with Northern Lights Children's Charity.

Chester, Cllr Eleanor Johnson.

At guides she has just become a leader and is aiming to run her own Guiding, Brownie or Rainbow group in the future. She works closely with the two leaders of the group and has planned and organised a number of activities for the guides including archery and camping. She completed her First Response, First Aid course in November last year which is needed before anyone can become a leader. She helps run the guide meeting every Tuesday evening and also spends her own time in planning for the evening meetings and preparing anything that is needed.

Being a helper at Sunday school has given her an insight into organising short sessions with children; she has recently helped with preparation for a play and read in church on a regular basis in front of the congregation. She also helps, when she can, with the PANYC (Parkgate & Neston Youth Club) which is affiliated to the church, planning events and helping at the meetings.

With Northern lights she has been lucky enough to visit Lapland on three occasions as a volunteer helper, funding herself on these trips as she is under 18 years of age. The trips take 12 children between the ages of 6 and 11 on a five day holiday and as soon as she is 18 she hopes to become an associate committee member and then she can become a full helper and be responsible for her own group of children while on the trips.

2012 sees the charity's 25th Anniversary and she is tirelessly fundraising to help the charity hit its target to take twenty-four children on the trip in December 2012. She assists with any fund raising event which is taking place, whether it be selling raffle tickets, helping at a bag pack, encouraging the Guides to fundraise for the charity and managing these events, designing display boards, presentations and any graphics required when running events and being a very active member of the Northern Lights committee.

Working with children in these situations has helped her make her decision to want to work with children as a career and especially with younger children as a primary school teacher. Her interest in primary teaching was sparked while volunteering at the Acorns Primary School where she has been lucky enough to gain some work experience assisting with year 3 and 4 pupils on a regular basis since April 2011. The Acorns is a fully inclusive school and she has found that working with the Special Educational Needs (SEN) children has been especially rewarding. As she has visited the school on a regular basis this year, she has got to know a lot of the children well, and found it extremely rewarding to see the look of satisfaction on a their faces as they completed a piece of work, or took part in a group activity knowing that she had helped give the children the confidence and ability to do so.

In addition to working with the children at Acorns Primary school she also volunteers at Thornton Hough Primary school where she is able to help the children in an art class. This is Rebecca's favourite subject at school and she enjoys being able to combine working with children and art at the same time. Working closely with both the children and the teachers has greatly improved her confidence, and she continues to work with the school on a regular basis when her timetable allows. This experience has given her an insight into the running of a classroom, and reinforced her desire to teach.

Rebecca spends a lot of her time thinking of others, she has a busy school life with only a month to go before her A level exams but she still find time to volunteer and work with children.

AboutMyArea congratulates Rebecca on her well deserved award.
