New Leg Added to Liverpool-Chester-Liverpool Bike Ride

With less than three weeks before the 19th Liverpool-Chester-Liverpool Bike Ride places are filling up fast.

With more entrants signing up than last year and a new route added, the 2012 Liverpool-Chester-Liverpool is set to be a highlight for the summer cycling calendar.
Now in its 19th year, the event is expected to attract 3,000 riders and offers cyclists the rare opportunity to cycle through the Mersey Tunnel, which is usually strictly off-limits to cyclists.
New to 2012 is the 25 mile Chester-Liverpool route, which has been introduced to accommodate the influx of cyclists around the Chester area. The route starts at the Countess of Chester Health Park, heading out into the Wirral countryside, before finishing at the exit of the Mersey Tunnel in Liverpool, giving riders the unique opportunity to cycle for approximately three miles underneath the River Mersey.
Paralympian cyclist, Rik Waddon, who grew up in Chester, rode part of the route last month. "The Liverpool-Chester-Liverpool Bike Ride will be a fun day out for everyone involved," said Waddon, who is currently preparing for London 2012. "The event is great for all round fitness and hopefully it will inspire some of the youngsters to take up cycling more seriously and eventually race."
He continued: "It is great that they have introduced a Chester-Liverpool route. I grew up in Chester, so love riding on the roads around Chester and the Wirral as the scenery is really fantastic. Having the opportunity to ride through the Mersey Tunnel, three miles of underground traffic free road, just before you finish in Liverpool will be an amazing experience."
The official charity partner for the 2012 Liverpool-Chester-Liverpool is once again Claire House Children's Hospice, a charity that Rik Waddon is a patron of. Participants raised over £20,000 for the children's charity in the 2011 event.
Riders have a choice of five routes in total, with the Wirral Circular, Chester-Liverpool, Liverpool-Chester routes all being 25 miles. The Liverpool-Chester-Liverpool route is 50 miles and the Liverpool Challenge, taking on Delamere Forest, is a challenging 90 miles.
Those joining entrants on Sunday 8th July include Olympic medallist and multiple World Champion, Craig Maclean. He believes it is an excellent event for the North West: "The more people we can get on bikes the better; cycling in this area has certainly experienced a boom so it's great to see all these people on bikes."
MacLean continued: "I'm going to give it a go, I'll try and pick the shorter route as I'm not really made for big miles, being a track sprinter, but I'll be there on the 8th of July. I hope to see lots of people there!"

Online entry closes 4th July. Entries on the day will be accepted as long as the event has not reached capacity. Please note that each rider will be charged a £2 surcharge for entering on the day.
