Cheshire Recruitment Drive in National Adoption Week

Published: 5th November 2012 16:14

Every year around 50 children are in need of adoption in the West Cheshire, Halton and Knowsley areas.

National Adoption WeekNational Adoption Week, taking place from 5-11 November 2012, is an annual event designed to raise awareness of adoption and encourage more people to come forward to adopt.

Cheshire West and Chester, Halton and Knowsley Borough Councils are partners in the TogetherForAdoption collaboration - working together to increase the possibilities of finding suitable families for children across the three boroughs.

At present 38 children are in need of adoption across the three areas, but sadly only 11 families are on the list as approved adopters. This shortfall means that some children will have to wait longer for their forever family.

The TogetherForAdoption collaboration is looking for families for single children and sibling groups from a variety of backgrounds; White British, Black, Asian and dual heritage children, children ranging from very young to school age. Some of the children may have disabilities; and some will have experienced difficult times but all of the children need loving families and care to secure their futures.

Councillor Mark Stocks, Cheshire West and Chester Council's Executive Member for Children and Young People, said: "There are no blanket bans in adoption, so please don't think we'll turn you down because you're over 45, single, don't own your own home or don't live in our area.

"What we really need are people who can offer a child or sibling group a loving and supportive family for life - people who can help a child to go on to thrive in a new family.

"Initially, we are simply asking people to come forward and find out more about adoption. If you think you might have what it takes, please pick up the phone today."

During adoption week the TogetherForAdoption collaboration will be campaigning locally to encourage more people to enquire about adoption.
