Neston High Pupil to Grace Hallowed Turf of Twickenham

Published: 28th February 2014 13:21

On Sunday 9th March, a pupil from Neston High School will be joining England Rugby's official anthem singer, soprano Laura Wright, on the pitch at Twickenham to sing the National Anthem as the school's uniquely designed rugby shirt is revealed ahead of the RBS 6 Nations match between England and Wales.

Twickenham.

100 pupils in total will be representing their respective schools, each wearing a shirt created at a Canterbury Kit Design workshop as part of All Schools, England Rugby's programme to help more secondary state schools play rugby. As Official Partner, Canterbury, the official kit supplier to England Rugby, held workshops across the UK where they invited the 100 schools taking part in the programme to design a rugby shirt for their school team.

Joel Gibbs, 17, is one of the lucky students and he will be proudly wearing the unique rugby shirt he helped design for Neston High School as he graces the hallowed turf at Twickenham.

During the workshops the pupils got to learn about the core values of the game and the importance of the rugby shirt before putting their thoughts and designs to paper. The final designs were signed off by the school before Canterbury took them away to prepare the students' artwork for production.

Canterbury will be providing each of the 100 schools with their bespoke shirts for their teams to play competitive rugby in, and March 9th is to be the official reveal of the designs.

Joel was chosen to represent his school at Twickenham by the PE department for his excellent leadership skills, participation and dedication to rugby since it was introduced at Neston High School. As well as being captain for his school rugby team, Joel attends after school rugby sessions where he coaches younger groups and is committed to helping others learn and progress in the sport.

The shirts will be revealed by the pupils in a spectacular display on the pitch as they perform alongside Laura Wright as she entertains the crowd ahead of the highly anticipated clash between the rival nations. The students will join Laura in singing the National Anthem in front of the 82,000 sell-out crowd and a mass TV audience watching at home before they head off to their seats to enjoy the match.

Chris Stephenson, CEO of Canterbury said: "All Schools is an amazing programme which we are proud to support. This is our second year as Official Partner and it's been wonderful to witness the impact the initiative is having on the schools involved. March 9th will be a truly unique day for the students involved, and one I imagine they will remember for a very long time."
