Neston Gets Happy on Good Friday!

Published: 22nd April 2014 08:32

Happy crowds thronged the market square in Neston as the Good Friday Market played host to a surprise event.

Hip & Harmony CIC Flash Mob in Neston

Hip & Harmony CIC's Paula Prytherch had been asked by Town Centre Manager Katy Pierce to put together a special piece of entertainment to add to the first 'enhanced' market since Neston Town Council took over earlier this month.

Paula proceeded to rehearse the Hip & Harmony Adult Community Choir and Young Singers, while Street Dance tutors Rachael, Emily and Callum put the young dancers through their paces, all to the tune of Pharrell Williams' recent hit, 'Happy.'

As shoppers went about their stall-browsing, they started to get a hint of things to come as just about every photographer in Neston appeared simultaneously - something of a clue, if ever there was one.  As the intro to the song rang out, the singers and dancers gradually converaged on the square in a 'flash mob' - singing, dancing, clapping and generally making everyone, well, Happy!

Also at the Market was live jazz music with Sue Reid-Povall, Malcolm Hogarth, John Higham and Isabel Toner, an Easter Egg Hunt organised by Sainsbury's, facepainting with CAN Group and Dr Bike.  Katy and the Town Council will be working on delivering more themed, specialist and enhanced markets in the coming months.  The event also served to celebrate the 're-opening' of Neston following the recent public realm improvement works in the centre of town.

A video of the event, by David Sejrup, can be seen on YouTube here.

Here are some photos (above and below) by Bernard Rose.

Well done, Katy and Paula, and all the musicians, and thanks to Bernard for the pictures. We even had the sun shining on a Bank Holiday! It was great to see the Market Square busy and lively. I look forward to more special markets.

It was a great atmosphere and really fun to be involved with. Does anyone have the name of the swing band that played?
Katie Robson
At 12:44 on 23rd April 2014, Katie Robson responded:
Hi Anna, I don't think they go by a band name as such, although some of them play on Tuesday nights at the Boathouse in Parkgate (Parade Jazz). I have contact information for Sue Reid-Povall - if you would like to email me on carriespacey@aboutmyarea.co.uk I can put you in touch.
