Man Arrested Following Fire in Neston

A fire broke out late on Saturday night in the High Street residential flats opposite Neston Town Hall.

Nearly a dozen emergency vehicles attended the incident, including three fire engines - one each from Chester, Ellesmere Port and Merseyside. Several occupants were treated on the scene for smoke inhalation.

Photographer Rob Clive, who supplied a report and photos, said: "A police officer informed me that foul play is suspected."

Cheshire Fire and Rescue said on Sunday: "Seven people and two dogs were rescued from a fire involving two flats in Neston.

"The fire was in the access hallway of the three storey flats and fire fighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels to extinguish the blaze.

"An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway."

A 49-year-old man was arrested and has now been released on bail. He is due to report to police on February 20.

Police are appealing for witnesses following the incident. DC Tim Cope, from Ellesmere Port and Neston CID, said: "I would like to appeal to anyone who was in the area between 10.30pm and 11.15pm on Saturday and believes they may have seen anything suspicious to contact Cheshire police on 101 quoting incident number 916 of February 7, 2015.

"Alternatively information can also be reported anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

Shocking ! and fortunate no-one was killed !

If this does turn out to be arson, as the lives of 7 people were put at significant risk, the culprit can expect to spend many years at Her Majesty's pleasure.

Lots of CCTV cameras around the top end of Neston now as well.
