Serious vandalism has resulted in the destruction of eleven trees in Stanney Fields Park in Neston over the weekend.
On Saturday night (June 13) a motorcycle was set on fire in the recently refurbished Dell area, causing damage to the pathway and a new bench nearby.
On Sunday, 11 mature trees, including an oak, were sawn down and left where they fell in the Ball Park area. In addition, the bench which had been partially burnt on Saturday also had large pieces sawn out of the back section.
11 trees were destroyed by vandals.
Sue Davies of the Friends of Stanney Fields said: "It's absolutely heart-breaking. If anybody knows anything about these incidents, or sees anything suspicious in future, please could they contact the police.
"The worry is that further vandalism could occur, just as people are enjoying the park during the better weather."
Stanney Fields Park is a multiple Green Flag-winning recreational space regularly used by people of all ages. Most recently it was the location for the CH64 Big Lunch, attended and enjoyed by hundreds of local residents.
Sgt Daniel Greenhalgh of Neston police unit said: "This is mindless vandalism to a community park enjoyed by families and well behaved children.
"Those responsible for this damage should be ashamed of their actions and clearly will not comprehend the cost of the damage which is into the £1000s. Investigations are on-going into the trees being chopped down together with a burnt out stolen bike that has been recovered for forensic examination.
"Anyone who has witnessed these crimes or that was present, but did not take part in the criminal acts, needs to speak with the Police as a priority. Our investigations will go wider than just the Stanney Fields park location and make use of the CCTV network currently available.
"Did you see suspicious activity? Did you see anyone with a saw in the street? Local officers are keen to trace suspects and bring them to justice. This is a significant act on the local community and shows complete disrespect to the time and investment for the community to enjoy. PC Barlow is dealing with the case and will speak with anyone who has information. Alternatively contact 101".
AboutMyArea joins the Friends of Stanney Fields and the Police in condemning the idiocy of these incidents. The park is there for all to enjoy, it is simply not acceptable for a brainless few to seek to spoil it.
If you see anything, or know anything about these incidents, PLEASE contact the police on 101. Alternatively, you can call Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
