Success for First Neston Young Driver in Advanced Motoring Scholarship Scheme

A Neston High School student from Ness has become the first young driver to successfully complete the advanced driving test under a new scholarship scheme.
.
As announced on AboutMyArea CH64 last year, the Wirral Group of the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) and Cheshire Police & Crime Commissioner's Crime Prevention Fund, are jointly funding scholarships for young Cheshire drivers aged from 17-25. The scheme encourages young drivers to take their advanced driving test and the IAM 'Skills for Life' course.
18 year old James Hodgson, who is currently studying for his 'A' Levels before applying to University, passed his basic driving test last October. Now James has successfuly completed the advanced test. Prior to the test he undertook the 'Skills for Life' course, which included a number of observed runs and a pre-test, under the guidance of the Wirral Advanced Motorists Group's volunteer observer Donald Howell. James' £139 fee will now be fully refunded under the terms of the scheme.
James said: "I enjoyed the scheme and got on well with Donald, my observer, and feel a lot more confident and safer when driving.
"I would strongly recommend other people to go on it."
Benefits of the scheme include the possibility of lower insurance premiums as most of the major insurers recognise the enhanced skills and awareness that the course can encourage in young drivers. Research shows that drivers who complete the course are 70% less likely to be involved in a collision.
John Dwyer, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire, will present James with his IAM certificate, and a special young driver scholarship certificate designed by WAM, at the next Group meeting on March 29th.

There are still four scholarships available under the scheme.
Car drivers holding a full licence and aged between 17-25 years may apply if they live in the postcode areas CH64, 65 or 66. (These areas are covered by both Cheshire Police and Wirral Advanced Motorists Group, the equal joint sponsors of the scheme).

This driver education scheme was initiated by the Project Rural Matters Association, based in Neston, which aims to support initiatives for community safety or well-being and which cooperates closely with Cheshire Constabulary.
